This article introduced the technologies of SDH-based Active Optical Network(AON), ATM-based Passive Optical Network, and Ethernet-Based Passive Optical Network and their characteristics, and discussed the development trends of Optical Access Network.

Passive Optical Network ( PON ) and Active Optical Network(AON) ( AON ) are two kinds of technologies that can be used to construct the Optical Access Network.

However, The PON has not been fully developed and the cost is also very high before the large-scale use. The main technology that is used to construct the Optical Access Network is AON ( Active Optical Network(AON) ).
